Samhain Group Ritual

Ritual Leader
North
East
South
West
The Old One
The FireKeeper
The Mabon
The Wind of Time

[Opening]

[The altar is dressed in black. Upon it are clay containers each holding salt, bread, honey and wine. Fire burns at the center of the Circle. Bundles of dry wood are stacked on either side of the altar.]

[All enter at the Western portal, circle deosil, saluting the East, to take their positions around the Circle. The Ritual Leader stands beside North. The Old One, the FireKeeper, the Mabon and the Wind of Time form a circle around the Fire at the center of the Circle.]

[Opening]

Ritual Leader:
O Great Spirit of this Circle, we ask for your blessing on this our ceremony of Samhuin. Let us begin by giving Peace to the quarters for without Peace can no work be.

East:
May there be Peace in the East.

South:
May there be Peace in the South.

West:
May there be Peace in the West.

North:
May there be Peace in the North.

[Here may each participant ask for Peace in their place by saying, "Let there be Peace in <their town/country/home>"]

All:
May there be Peace in our Whole World.

Ritual Leader:
Let us recite the Druids' Prayer.
Grant, O Spirit, Thy Protection.

North:
And in Protection, Strength.

East:
And in Strength, Understanding.

South:
And in Understanding, Knowledge.

West:
And in Knowledge, the Knowledge of Justice.

The Old One:
And in the Knowledge of Justice, the Love of It.

The FireKeeper:
And in the Love of It, the Love of All Existences.

Ritual Leader:
And in the Love of All Existences, the Love of Spirit and All Goodness.

[Awen.]

Ritual Leader:
Let the Four Directions be honored that power and radiance might enter our Circle for the good of all beings.

East [facing East, making the symbol of the Celtic Cross in the following manner: top to bottom, left to right, enclosing in a deosil circle from top and around, touching the center to activate the Eastern Gate; the ritual participants may also make this symbol if they so desire]:

With the blessing of the Hawk of Dawn soaring in the Clear Pure Air, we call upon the powers of the East. Let the Breath of Life open this Eastern Gate and inspire us with the Element of Air.

South [facing South, making the symbol of the Celtic Cross in the following manner: top to bottom, left to right, enclosing in a deosil circle from top and around, touching the center to activate the Southern Gate; the ritual participants may also make this symbol if they so desire]:

With the blessing of the Great Stag in the heat of the chase and the inner Fire of the Sun, we call upon the powers of the South. Let the Eye of Light open this Southern Gate and inflame us with the Element of Fire.

West [facing West, making the symbol of the Celtic Cross in the following manner: top to bottom, left to right, enclosing in a deosil circle from top and around, touching the center to activate the Western Gate; the ritual participants may also make this symbol if they so desire]:

With the blessing of the Salmon of Wisdom who dwells within the Sacred Waters of the Pool, we call upon the powers of the West. Let the Heart of Love open this Western Gate and instill us with the Element of Water.

North [facing North, making the symbol of the Celtic Cross in the following manner: top to bottom, left to right, enclosing in a deosil circle from top and around, touching the center to activate the Northern Gate; the ritual participants may also make this symbol if they so desire]:

With the blessing of the Great Bear of the Starry Heavens and the Deep and Fruitful Earth, we call upon the powers of the North. Let the Hand of Law open this Northern Gate and imbue us with the Element of Earth.

Ritual Leader:

In the name of the Star Father and the Earth Mother, the True Taker and the Great Giver, One Being of Light, I proclaim the Festival of Samhuin within this Circle. Now may we take a moment to silently (or not) acknowledge our Sisters, Brothers and Family who are celebrating the Festival of Samhuin at this time.

[Moment of quiet.]

Ritual Leader:

We have reached Samhuinn, the Time which is no Time. We stand in a Place where nothing is, where the Veil between the Worlds stretches, becomes thin and fragile. Others come to share with us. They are the past, as we shall all become the past. We are the present, as they have once been the present. Together, we embrace a future that we all create.

We honor ourselves, our ancestors and those who will come with blessings from the Earth.

[North takes the container of salt from the altar, East takes the bread, South takes the container of honey and West takes the container of wine; then moving around the circle to each member, giving to each, then return to their positions.]

Ritual Leader:

May all of us in this Circle now step forward to share our feast, holding the images of our loved ones in our hearts.

[All move to the Fire to stand with The Old One, the FireKeeper, the Mabon and the Wind of Time.]

West [casting the remains of the wine into the Fire]:

The Sun of all our lives sets in the West, but the Stars of the Seven Sisters have risen. Beloved Spirits, we welcome you to share the wine of Love.

North [casting the remains of the salt into the Fire]:

The veil of Midnight discloses the stars. O Ancestors, in Wisdom share the salt of the Earth.

South [casting the remains of the honey into the Fire]:

In the Light of Day lies understanding; shadows are small. True spirits, share your clear vision as we share the sweetness of honey on the tongue of Truth.

East [casting the remains of the bread into the Fire]:

The Sun is reborn in the setting stars of dawn; may the souls of our loved ones share again the bread and breath of Life.

The Old One:

Twilight is a time for sharing - and a time for remembering - sharing the fragrance of the cooling earth - the shadows of the gathering dusk. Here our two worlds meet and pass - the frantic sounds of man grow dimmer as the light recedes - the unhurried rhythm of the other world swells in volume as the darkness deepens.

The FireKeeper:

It is not strange that discord has no place in this great symphony of sound - it is not strange that a sense of peace descends upon all living things - it is not strange that memories burn more brightly - as the things of substance lose their line and form in the softness of the dark.

The Wind of Time:

Twilight is a time for sharing - and a time for remembering - remembering the things of beauty wasted by our careless hands - our frequent disregard for other living things - the many songs unheard because we would not listen.

The Mabon:

Listen tonight with all the wisdom of your spirit - listen too with all the compassion of your heart - lest there come another night - when there is only silence - a great and total silence.

Ritual Leader:

Let the Light be dimmed as are our eyes, seeing and yet not seeing.

[The Firekeeper pulls apart the Fire until it is only embers. Darkness descends.]

The Wind of Time:

To all that is brief and fragile
superficial, unstable;
To all that lacks foundation
argument or principles;
To all that is light,
fleeting, changing, finite,
To smoke spirals,
wand roses;
To sea foam
and mists of oblivion;
To all that is light in weight
for itinerants
of this transient earth;
Somber, raving
with transitory words
and vaporous bubbly wines,
I toast
In breakable glasses.

The Old One:

Now is the time to remember what we have forgotten, to discover what we have lost, to retrieve that which we have stolen from ourselves.

[A moment of silent meditation.]

The FireKeeper

In this time of stillness, in the moment of no-moment, we can only offer to ourselves and to others a promise to create a future in which Love can exist, in which there is renewal.

[The FireKeeper begins to build up the fire as participants hand him branches, each one naming that which they choose to renew in themselves in the coming year.]

[When this is done all participants, save the Mabon, stand in the perimeter of the Circle, with him at the center with the Fire.]

The Mabon:

Life and death,
a twisting vine sharing a single root.

A water bright green
stretching to top a twisted yellow
only to wither itself
as another green unfolds overhead.

One leaf atop another
yet under the next;
a vibrant tapestry of arcs and falls
all in the act of becoming.

Death is the passing of life.
And life
is the stringing together of so many little passings.

[Silent meditation]

The Old One:

We each leave this Circle today, carrying with us Hope and Inspiration. Let us sing to the Sun the Sacred Word and may our voices be heard throughout the whole world.

[Intone Awen thrice.]

The Mabon:

The work is uttered and ended. The Word has descended; behold the fulfillment. May our lives and our hearts be filled with power and light.

The FireKeeper:

It is the hour of recall. As the light dies down, let it be reborn in your hearts. May your memories hold what the eye and ear have gained.

The Wind of Time:

Let all in this Circle, of all worlds, now depart in peace, respect and love.
Let the spirits of the Four Directions be thanked for their blessings.

East [facing East, making the reverse symbol of the Celtic Cross in the following manner: right to left, bottom to top, enclosing in a widdershins circle from bottom and around, touching the center to withdraw the Eastern Gate; the ritual participants may also make this symbol if they so desire]:

In the name of the Hawk of Dawn and of the elemental Air, we thank the powers of the East. By the Rising Star, by the Morning Star, by the Sky at Dawn, I withdraw this Eastern Gate and radiate its light.

North [facing North, making the reverse symbol of the Celtic Cross in the following manner: right to left, bottom to top, enclosing in a widdershins circle from bottom and around, touching the center to withdraw the Northern Gate; the ritual participants may also make this symbol if they so desire]:

In the name of the Great Bear of the Starry Heavens and the elemental Earth, we thank the powers of the North. By the Northern Lights and the glittering stars at midwinter, by the deep and abiding Earth, I withdraw this Northern Gate and radiate its light.

West [facing West, making the reverse symbol of the Celtic Cross in the following manner: right to left, bottom to top, enclosing in a widdershins circle from bottom and around, touching the center to withdraw the Western Gate; the ritual participants may also make this symbol if they so desire]:

In the name of the Salmon of Wisdom and the elemental Water, we thank the powers of the West. By the Moon rising at sunset, by the Evening Star and the Sea, I withdraw this Western Gate and radiate its light.

South [facing South, making the reverse symbol of the Celtic Cross in the following manner: right to left, bottom to top, enclosing in a widdershins circle from bottom and around, touching the center to withdraw the Southern Gate; the ritual participants may also make this symbol if they so desire]:

In the name of the Great Stag and of the elemental Fire, we thank the powers of the South. By the midsummer Sun at Noon, I withdraw this Southern Gate and radiate its light.

All:

May the harmony of lands be complete.

[Awen.]

Ritual Leader:

Let us all radiate Light in our lives and may it be shown by our deeds. I now declare this Festival of Samhuin closed and this Ritual ended, but only in the apparent world.

All:

Nothing ends.
